Gourmet-style hot cheese appetizer without the fuss. The easiest (and most appreciated) appetizer you'll ever serve!
This recipe will satisfy even the most discriminating palate, and take you all of 5 minutes to prepare! What is great about it, is that is is also very versatile - it can be served as a terrific stand alone appetizer or along with the main meal. A word of caution: Be careful not to leave it in the oven too long, or your perfect presentation will literally melt away.
Ingredients:
- One large wheel of Brie cheese (min. 2lbs / 36 ounces)
- 1/4 to 1/3 cup dark brown sugar
- Walnut or pecan halves to cover (12 ounce bag should be more than enough)
- Your choice of crackers. Some that are party favorites include: wheat thins, crispy rice crackers or garlic bagel chips.
Directions:
- Preheat oven to 350°.
- Unwrap Brie.
- Spoon the soft brown sugar over the entire top of the brie wheel, so that it’s about ¼ inch thick.
- Place nut halves lightly embedded into the brown sugar. To wow your guests, you can make a pattern with the nut halves as you place them on the top of the cheese wheel. One that works well (and is pretty quick work) is to make a cross in the center of the wheel of cheese using four halves; then keep placing nut halves in a circular pattern, working your way from the center to the outer edges of the cheese. The result is a party pleaser!
- Bake for 10-15 minutes, depending on your oven. Check if the wheel is “done” by gently inserting a flat bladed knife into the side. If it goes in easily, it’s ready to serve!
- Plate on a decorative platter and fan a selection of crackers around the wheel. Add a fancy (dull) appetizer knife on the platter, for serving up the steaming sweet and nutty cheese.
